SubC thank you so much. These are all good suggestions. I feel better already. I had no idea re amazon!!!

Plus I think I'm ready to get rid of the non-sentimental. Once those are gone, I can reasses. Probably getting rid of even a few little things will put me on the right track. I will feel better. Thank you so much!!

Cleaners are here. I'm less nerve-wracked with time. They are doing everything including inside of fridge. They are very good to me and for me. They snuck into bedroom while I was preparing for my class tomorrow and that is nice and clean!

So I'm studying for my class. I called the city and they will pick up my old AC tmr AM. one less thing. One less thing.

I also gave the cleaners a very nice coat just back from the dry cleaners and a dress. They are very kind and not insulted. I could easily take to good will but the nice stuff I give them first dibs.

Once they are finished, probably just another half hour, I'll be able to shower and get ready for my excellent adventure with mom.

Ok Tatoulia, breathe.

Definitely start with the non-sentimental.

When I was a kid, my great grandmother was in a nursing home and they always wanted little things for bingo prizes - is there any kind of program like that near you? Also, sometimes schools want donations for kids to shop for their families at Christmas time.

Not every goodwill is the same. If you don't have a charity shop near you that you think would appreciate the donations, there is an "Amazon give back box" program where you can put your donations in a box from amazon and print free shipping for a participating charity. You could check it out and see if there are options you like better.

My plan for today is to focus on the home studio and making some Christmas gifts.

SubC how nice that you've gotten rid of some things! Great work.

I laughed out loud regarding Tillie's new cat. I was thinking the same thing but not so succinctly!

Okay ladies I own too much stuff. Too much little stuff. Too many little things. They are in a cabinet and then squirreled away in other places. I don't know what to do. Goodwill just throws things around. The consignment shop has been a giant bust for me. I'm stuck. Need ideas. Some have sentimental value and some have no sentimental value. I suppose I could start with the non-sentimental things. Tell me what to do. I need to do something with them. Bear in mind I love little things but I can't have this many.

If I have multiples of things (like cute little salt cellars) do I keep one of each and get rid of the others? Some I only have three to the set. Do I get rid of two and keep one? I'm going to need to be told to get rid of these things. I have too many little things.

Thank you. Sorry to suddenly spin into despair. Luckily a little black cat is sleeping next to me. I'll calm down soon

🙂 Tatoulia.

Tillie, I think he's your cat.

Had a nice time with the girls. Got cleaned up a little and put a few decorations out after they arrived, and there was pie, so the rest didn't matter.

We went to the neighbor's tree farm for dd1's tree and dd2 dug a little cedar out of the yard and made a door wreath from our cedars too, so they went home ready for Christmas decorating. I'll slowly put away fall and do Christmas next weekend. Dh is going to be gone for work most of the week.

The girls took a couple of games from their childhood, called ds and set aside a puzzle for him, and left a few in my discard pile, so I have a little bit more shelf space.

Glad you had such a great day, Tillie!

I have cleaners coming in the AM. I don't clean before they come. Goes against my grain.

Well I did something today that was crafty (hi CM), good for the environment (well hello SubC) and clever/smart/tidy (hey Tillie). I took a packing box (small, about seven square inches) and I lined it with a previously used plastic
bag, then I wrapped it (top open) in pretty wrapping paper and it's now where I'll put my winter hats & gloves when I come in the door. It's in the bottom shelf of my entry way table.

Now please don't get upset?each one of you is crafty, caring about the environment and clever. But I honestly thought of each of you. I'm pretty pleased with myself.

I'm tired. I did mom's groceries today. I used the car and I filled it with gas so that we are all set for our excellent adventure tmr.

Good Afternoon Everybody

Hi Tatoulia
WTG! buying an experience/event on black Friday rather than any item. 😀

Maybe the neighbor is into minimalism and made the decoration sparse because they like lots of empty space with a small amount of something?
Or maybe that's all he had to put out and hoped you would add to it?

Please do not be so hard on yourself as you learn cake decorating.
As long as it tastes good enjoy your experiments. (((HUG)))

Hi Subclinical
Fingers still crossed for a good outcome with your HGS X

Yeah, I heard that the Pyrex plastic lids are crap.

YEA! for some new pottery tools.
I know you will get lots of use out of them. 😀

Came online this morning and before I could post all the cats, including Jack (you're not my cat) on the back porch demanded all my attention.
Forgot all about posting as I got busy doing all sorts of other things.
Fun things, relaxing things and even dried 2 loads of laundry on the line, folded and put it away.
It's been a lovely laid back easy going day. 😀

SubC good to hear from you and thank you for keeping us posted on the school situation. I will cut up cake into individual pieces and take to mom's house!

Nice quiet AM. it's rainy and fairly dark. I love it. We have no lights on and the window is open and tiny cat is next to me. We are just hanging.

I will take care of mom's groceries today. I have tomorrow off to spend with mom. I can tell already that getting up for work on Tuesday is going to be a Bear. Plus I'm teaching on my lunch hour Tuesday and I have a meeting that I co-chair (volunteer work) that evening. And Thursday I'm taking another day off to attend a seminar for one of my other volunteer positions. Then Friday I'm taking half a day to do something with mom and BF. So I'm blasting through the vacation days this week. Not happy. I'm trying to have at least one week to cash in. Let's see how that goes. I used to try to carry over at least five but now my goal is to cash in at least five every year. I've always had time left to do so and I think I'll be good again this year. I think I still have two days for wiggle room to still meet my five day cash-in goal. Our vacation days/sick days/personal time are all lumped into one, which I really appreciate. No need to pretend to be sick. The guilt would kill me.

<<hugs>> for CM.

Yay for cake and friends!

I am mid-pie. House still messy and undecorated.

Cautiously optimistic on ❤️gs d❤️D says to come on Tuesday. If the ex does what he said, all will be fine, but she spent yesterday with her lawyer - hope for the best, expect the worst....

Bought myself half a dozen new pottery tools on small business Saturday, and got ddil a rock camel. (Buy art from living artists...) also ordered some silicone covers for my Pyrex because all the stupid plastic lids keep breaking.

Tatoulia, even ugly cakes taste good! Don't throw away food if someone wants it!

Oh CM what awful news. I'm so sorry. I'm glad you are getting a bit of time to yourself.

I decorated the cake tonight using buttercream. It wasn't stiff enough and I had trouble but I worked on the cake and I'm trying. It will take practice. I was going to just toss it but BF suggested I bring it to mom's and try. I serve to who ever drips by. I'll go wrap it and see how I feel tomorrow.

I've got to put my sheets on the bed. I missed the trash on Friday and someone has really filled our recycling bins. I still managed to fit some recycling in there.

We are cozy here, Tillie. I walked today and visited with BF. I've been cleaning up after myself. Which is good. I'll go put the sheets on the bed now.

The only thing I bought on Black Friday were Holiday Pops tickets for BF and me. They were 30% off on certain nights. I don't remember them doing this before. Generally we just stop by the box office to purchase.

So good to not be buying gifts this year. I haven't put out any of my Christmas things yet although neighbor put a very sparse thing out on the common area table that I have been decorating the past few years. He put out a placemat and a big bowl with three ornaments in it. That's it. So I hung a wreath from the mirror and I added candlesticks and two Christmas trees. It looks better. The two trees are the same size but one is green and the other is gold. I'm not sure if I should take the green one away since the rest of it is white, gold or silver. Maybe I'll find a way to balance some more green in. I hope he doesn't mind that I added to it. It was very sparse.

Good Morning Everybody

Hi Tatoulia
So nice you used your special cake pan
Really hope you aren't decorating it with Crisco flowers, JK HaHa 😉
Stay cozy by your fireplace and in your PJs as often as you can. 😀

Hi CriticalMass
As sad as the news was, I am glad that you learned of it while in their company rather than by message while you were alone (((HUG)))

It really does put a crimp in the nighttime activities and creativeness when we have to be very quiet.
I used to do my best cleaning in the middle of the night when I wasn't busy sewing or other fun stuff late at night.

Wishing you LOTS of busy and creative time this next week ;D

Woke up at 3:00am & couldn't fall back to sleep so I got up.
By 5:30am I was able to sleep some more so I did.
Problem is when Steven comes home he goes straight into the garage and stays in there until he comes in to go to bed.
He has been staying out there until 1, 2 or 3am.
But when he comes in he always makes lots of noise and wakes me up so my sleep is not sound knowing I will be woken up sometime.

Anyways...
The wind is really blowing today, it's overcast too.
Good day to stay inside.
Plan is to wash my hair and do some cooking and then clean the kitchen.

Hope you all are ignoring all the ads and commercials begging you to spend all your hard earned money on things you do not need or even really want. (((hug)))

Hi all

I had hoped to post on Thanksgiving Day but kept getting sidetracked, not to mention the food coma nap that subtracted a few hours. Yesterday my roommate left to visit out of town family so I needed to get the instructions for the cats' new routines since they have been on special food and so on.

When roommate departed I had visions of being my old night owl bachelorette self, staying up late being wild and crazy with sewing, artwork, whatever, anyplace in the house that suited my fancy. I miss being able to do that when she's home because she has to get to bed at a civilized hour because of her job and is a light sleeper, and the way this house is laid out I'm not able to go to the far end of the house and still be able to return to my bedroom without waking her. I've long joked about digging a secret tunnel from the family room back to my bedroom.

But this time around, things took a different, surreal turn. I'd gone over to the house of the family who started the bunny rescue to help with a bulk mailing. They're a family of just three. The husband wasn't there. A neighbor lady was present and the mother and daughter. We four women were getting ready to eat Thanksgiving leftovers. I figured the husband had gone out tooling around on his scooter because it was a pretty day.

Then shortly into the meal and conversation, I was informed that he'd died Wednesday night. At first I thought they were joking, till the neighbor lady showed me the text on her phone. It was probably a blessing because he had a slew of health problems and early Alzheimer's. Still, it has been a shock. When I got home later, I found that I couldn't focus on anything productive.

My sleep last night ended up in a morass of frustrating confusion dreams this morning. I woke all stiff and with circulation cut off in my legs - but relieved to be back in reality such as it is. I'd already decided to let go of any expectations of having a weekend of great creative productivity. Sometimes unexpected things happen. I'll do a few simple things and call it good. Several projects are ready to go and can be done in the daytime this coming week. And I'm glad my roommate and I are on a decluttering roll in several areas, so there's that.

I'll read back through the posts before next time. Everybody stay well and keep on keeping on.

Oh how wonderful about the Nate's and their new things. ESP the rag rugs. Oh so lovely.

I slept and goofed around all day. Still in my pjs and it's after 11:30 PM. oh and I'm baking a cake in a pan given to me by my dear beloved late friend I've had it hiding in the cabinet for 20+ years.

Tomorrow I must leave the house. I did two or theee small loads of laundry today. And now I'm just waiting to take the cake out of the oven. Then I'll have to wait for it to cool before wrapping it. I'll decorate it tomorrow.

I think tmr is supposed to be nice here. Meanwhile I've been so cozy with the fireplace. Hope everyone is doing well!!

Good Morning Everybody

Hope you all are having a wonderful day.

Hi Tatoulia
Thank you 😀
YEA! for being stuffed with good food eaten with people you cherish.

Remember I mentioned that I have been doing that
"Swedish death cleaning"?
That's just thinning out unnecessary stuff so if you die somebody else doesn't have to do that depressing chore.
Anyways, there were a few things I did not want to toss/donate/recycle/sell in the mix but wanted to let go of.
Well, along with that giant heirloom cast iron frying pan there were some other lovely things that Nate & Mrs. were very happy to receive.
I feel so good that the items are now properly rehomed. ;D

They were also very happy to take 5 of my beautiful rag rugs that I'd made the other Winter.

Today it's cloudy again but not too chilly. The winds are expected to start up soon.
Such a nice day to stay home inside.
Not tempted at all to face the craziness of shopping. ;D

Hello Everybody

Hi Subclinical
Wishing you a very pleasant visit with Ds's.
My fingers are crossed that this all gets straightened out with a positive outcome. (((HUG)))

Hi Tatoulia
YEA! that the headlight was not very much to get replaced!
Wishing you a very nice day and long weekend. 🙂

How long has it been since I was last able to report that I had some rain?
Last night we got RAIN!!!
Not a lot but I will happily take whatever I get.
Today has been lovely, clear blue skies, not bitterly cold.
Nate and Mrs. Nate decided to drive out this way again and spend a short visit with me and another "borrowed" relative.
It was short but sweet because they needed to get back to Mrs. Nate's Mom's house for dinner at 2:00pm and it's a two hour drive.
It's only 1:15pm here now and I will either mend/hem two things or do some beading. 😉

Happy thanksgiving! At ds's, i'm The only one up.

Tatoulia, i'm Glad about the headlight.

Got e-mail from dhd last night and her ex has backed out of the agreement to homeschool. Yesterday was dhgs last day in his old school, and they have no plan and ex won't answer phone or texts. Monday is a school day. dhgs is currently with his dad and she is worried. So, of course, I am worried.

Tillie glad you got a day of cooking in! The headlight was $35! So happy about that! I got my prescription and coffee filters and some pretty roses. No crisco. That's okay. I'll get to a real grocery store after Thanksgiving.
Slept til about an hour ago. I can hear the wind and the cold air coming in.

Tillie!!!!!

I forgot to tell you how excited I was to hear that the Nates stopped by! I recall your visits with them so long ago! I am so happy you saw them abs I bet they will live your cast iron frying pan! There is nothing like a well-loved cast iron pan.

I had so much to read last night and each post was like a visit. It was wonderful.

I have to pick up a prescription today and when I do, I'll try to remember to pick up some crisco so I can practice. I know I don't eat those and this is not the best time of year for me to be eating buttercream flowers, Miss Tillie. But I loved the suggestion!

We have a half day at work today and even though I'm home I cannot wait for it to be upon us. I think it's 2:00 when we can call it a day. I am tired and want to nap. I also am waiting to hear from garage about the car. I think I mentioned the headlight is out. I'm not anxious I just want to sleep.

I'll write more later. Motown I am rooting for you! I think that trying to get the floors picked up would do wonders for your spirits. I wish I could come over to help you. I would in an instant.

Hi CM, Tillie and Tatoulia, as well as Motown, I did not mean to ignore anyone.

We are on the way to ds. Stayed in a cute little state park last night - bed, two night stands, little 2 drawer dresser and a table and chairs for 2. Nice break from all the "stuff" - i'd Even remove the rather large tv from the dresser.

Hi Subclinical

Love your questions & opinions
especially the reasons for shopping.
You do so very well on not impulse buying and when you do buy it has always been necessary or well thought out purchases/gifts.

Hi Tatoulia
WOW! what a distance you have to travel just to put out the trash.
When we say "WAY TO GO!" for taking out the trash we really mean it. 🙂
Still, I would probably say what the heck and just pull on a coat over my jammies and do it anyway. ;D

Oooohhhh! Reading everyone's posts made me so happy!

I live on a main road right in Boston Proper. I live in a brownstone (one floor only) and I'm in the middle of a block. Not true middle, but middle. My garbage goes in the alley in the back. I have to go down my front stairs walk past a restaurant, and back around the corner then into thr alley to put my garbage behind my house! Would love to live where my underwear would suffice and double as a raccoon repellent!!!

Many, many years ago, probably 20, I couldn't sleep due to the heat and humidity so in the middle of the night I headed over to my neighbor's house (around the corner from me). They were out of town and I was taking care of their cat. I'd slept there in the past for the AC. By "middle of the night" we are probably only talking 10:30 or 11 because there is no way I would've headed over if it weren't still fairly populated outside. I took my pillow and put on flip flops. That was great except in the AM, walking home in my bright aqua pjs with the flowers and my pillow and I had to pass the restaurant where people were enjoying breakfast outside.

Ah, youth.

Love you all. MOTOWN I feel confident we can find a place to share our photos on line. Maybe Flickr?

So, Motown, you asked for opinions. Most of the time, when someone asks for my opinion, it turns out they didn't really want it. Also, I am not judging you because I know almost nothing about your history and values.

But here are my thoughts from the totally different place where I am:

1) you don't need antidepressants. You need to change your environment.

2) is there anything at any of the Black Friday sales that you truly NEED?

3) are you buying any gifts for the people who live in your house? Why?

4) you told sil to leave and he left? I think you said he is not legally married to your Dd, so, are there children now living in your house that have no legal or biological connection to you? Do you love these children? (my only grandson and one of my daughters have no legal or biological connection to me, otoh, my kid's friends have temporarily lived with us before, and if they had not been respectful, I would have kicked their butts to the curb. In fact, one was there 4 days and I cut off his internet access and told ds he was never to return.)

5) how do you feel about clearing off a section of floor, informing the people in your house that you intend to dispose of all items left on said floor, and then doing it? (Donate or trash) keep expanding until it includes all floors not in rooms where other people sleep, and then work your way upwards including other surfaces.

6) where is your son, and why do you still have his crap?

Good Evening

Hi CriticalMass

Great to hear from you! 😀
YEA! for finding the flannel. Perfect time of year for it.
WTG! for cleaning out the outdated pantry items.
Sounds like you two have come to a very good compromise on the thanksgiving menu ingredients.
Regardless of what any of your ancestors may have done or not done...
you are as innocent as the European Sparrows we see covering the land and skies these days.
It's not their fault their ancestors were brought here and that the Sparrows encroachment caused the extinction of dozens of indigenous bird species.
(((HUG)))
YEA! that your store wasn't crazy busy!
This time of year I would rather starve than go into any store.
Fortunately my store was slow yesterday so I am now all stocked up with all things kitty related and enough stuff for me too. 😉

Hi Motown
No I eat radishes raw all crispy & crunchy.
I had wanted rutabagas but the store only had four of them and they were rather squishy and rutabagas are supposed to be rather hard before cooking.
The parsnips didn't look much better so I just settled for raw radishes, I like radishes.
I wasn't the one asking about sleeping arrangements but that sure is a houseful to get bedded down!

Today I did wash the dishes and also dusted.
Having the dishes all washed is satisfying but I get no joy out of dusting. ;P

Good afternoon!

Beautiful day here in Arkansas but somewhat cold (at least to me).

I got up and got the shower this morning and then deep fried up 3 cans of refrigerated biscuits and coated with sugar for our office Thanksgiving potluck. Then fixed a big thermos of hot chocolate for my grandson who is going deer hunting with hubby (basically just walking through the woods and looking around, not really expecting to see, much less kill, a deer).

Having a busy day at work and this afternoon is going to be a drowsy one because we all overate, of course.

Tillie, I am envious of your cast iron collection. I use cast iron a LOT. But then again, being from the south it's kinda expected that the best cornbread and fried taters come out of a big ol' cast iron skillet. LOL! but good for you giving away your excess to someone who will appreciate it and get many more years of good use from it.

Also envious of your house being company-worthy. And glad you could open our home to special visitors. I cringe whenever the kids bring in another kid. Yes, it's really that bad. So, I am debating whether or not to attempt to put up a Christmas tree. I have never NOT put one up. Maybe instead of the big one I will just put up a small one as I think I have a 7.5 ft one in the shed (actually I have about a dozen trees in the shed from which I can choose but getting to them is another story...).
And Tatoulia, around here we certainly wouldn't think about having to get dressed from head to toe just to run the trash bin to the curb. We just runt out however, even if we are in undies and boots chasing a racoon! That's a hilarious story!

Please clarify, COOKED RADISHES??? I love good fresh cool radishes pulled from the garden (or from the store) and chipped up in a salad but have never considered them cooked (but then of course I don't really like vegetables and I don't like any of the cooked at all.

I will be baking my pies tomorrow (squash, pecan (AKA karo nut) and pumpkin pies. And a couple of (cast iron) skillets of cornbread for the cornbread dressing.

Tillie, you asked about sleeping arrangements for all those extras in my house. Well I have 6 bedrooms but had already repurposed most of them once the kids left home. One was a guest room, one my office, one a man cave, one was my son's former bedroom but still like it had been, and one was my scrapbook room, and then the master bedroom. So the man cave now has a full bed where two boys (13 & 12) sleep (but no closet because it is where the hunting stuff and gun safe is so they cannot have access), two boys (12 & 11) sleep in my son's old room (with most of his crap, er, stuff, still there), the almost 11 year old girl and the 4 year old girl sleep in my office on a futon and a toddler bed (still no space in there because of my desk, file cabinets and book cases even after I took down the L-shaped return/workspace from the computer desk).
And the daughter and the 3-year old boy and the 9 month old baby (and the SIL before I told him to his the road) sleep in the guest room on a king size bed (that USED to be nice but...). Then hubby and I still have the master (that we share with 4 cats and 4 dogs (who mostly all sleep with us).

Whew! That DOES sound like chaos in the making doesn't it. Well, believe me it is.

And it doesn't mater how much we cajole, threaten, promise, reward or whatever, they refuse to pick up after themselves. They would rather just walk over the pile of dirty clothes and trash on the floor, etc. I don't understand it. My brain goes crazy. I honestly think I should talk to a health care professional about some kind of antidepressant or something. Opinions?

So, back to work I go. Will likely not be on for a while as I will be super busy tomorrow and then Thursday with all the cooking and shopping (gotta hit those Black Friday sales when the stores open on Thursday afternoon--which I like better than having to get up at midnight to get ready for sales that start at 3 a.m.!)

Y'all have a MARVELOUS Thanksgiving! I'm thankful for good friends like y'all!!!!

Figured I better pop in before I let too much time go by again.

Kind of coasting into the busy season. Avoiding the stores that are likely to be busy. Was really blessed yesterday - even Aldi was kind of at a lull. I only needed a small number of items.

I'm being a good sport about the preparation of the turkey dinner my roommate likes to do. It's not that elaborate really. The turkey breast needs to get cooked because it was last year's BOGO. I'm going to make pumpkin pies and probably some garlic bread. I omit cloves from my pies because of her food allergies and she makes the stuffing from a recipe that doesn't use other herbs she can't have. And she understands why I pick out the onion bits, LOL.

My approach to the holiday is pretty basic spiritually, to give thanks in the here and now, and as always pray for peace and healing in our troubled world. The mythos from gradeschool, well, of course we know how much more complex the true history has been and I hope none of my maternal ancestors did evil things but I have no way of knowing. My paternal side was German immigrants well after the Civil War.

But people are products of various conflicts and political shifts so one may never know. That's why I just keep my prayers general - we can always use good qualities such as humility, kindness, empathy, etc. to go forward with. I'm a fan of Josh Groban and his song "Thankful" resonates with me.

The sun porch remains a fond dream, but my roommate said our guy said he tried to send a long text. He's going to resend it. Hope it's happy news. He has been dealing with some health issues so we hope things are okay in that regard too. The weather this week is nice and sunny, so if he feels like working that'd be great.

Even the prospect of the changes to come has energized us with our respective decluttering goals. Roommate got some of those pull out drawer thingies for her pantry. Unfortunately she had a bunch of outdated food to toss, but being able to see what she has will help with that in future. We now have recycling service - single stream but better than none.

Tillie, Tatoulia, and SubC, it feels good to bless someone else with the items we no longer wish to keep and to simplify - such a win-win. And to find things we can use and not have to go shopping. I'd gotten some flannel for a project then couldn't remember where I put it. Found it this morning - now I can sew.

Motown I feel ya regarding the floors. My bedroom floor keeps playing hide and seek. But I'm going to keep at it so eventually it will be a real floor! We can do this!

Take care and be safe, my friends.

Good Morning Everybody

Sunny bright cloudless day
but very cold.
Had some dishes to wash yesterday but didn't do them and just made more dirty dishes.
Guess today I'll wash dishes.
But even with the dirty dishes all rinsed and stacked next to the sink my home was company ready.
Not immaculate but good enough.

I have and use inherited ancient cast iron fry pans, a whole set (6) of different sizes.
There is one HUGE frying pan that had gotten to heavy for me to easily use any more.
I asked Mrs. Nate if they could use it and she said she would take it.
We all enjoy Nintendo gaming systems and I asked if she wanted my Nintendo 64, she took that too.
I still have my other gaming systems.
These were items that meant a lot to me and I wanted them to go to good homes and now I feel so good that they have a new home. 😉
