Janie I am so sorry this is happening! What a terrible state of living you are in. Obviously you know that your husband has a disorder and I am so sorry. Two books that are frequently recommended are Buried in Treasure and Digging Out.

I am so glad to have found this site. I have been married to a hoarder for 40 years. He has our garage (2 car) full to the point you cannot park a car in it Never have been able to in the 30 years we have lived in this house. Large upstairs play room is so full you can hardly walk, he never wants to get rid of anything obviously, laudry room cabinets, hall closet, guest bedroom full. Why would a person want to hold on to over 400 VCR tapes? Honestly!

He knows that it gets to me, it literally stays on my mind constantly. I like to keep certain things, clothes, craft items, books etc. but I am an organized clutterer.

I am so sick of not being able to feel comfortable (and safe) in my own home, being promised that he will work on it, etc. etc. 40 years? I doubt he will ever be able to work on it. He is retired now, has plenty of time to work on things, one step at a time. My yelling and complaining and begging doesn't help the situation but I this is also my home that I spend a lot of time working on, cleaning (no help) So glad to have found this group.

I honestly do not know how much more I can take. I am active and 9 years younger, if that matters, and life is too short to be promised things will get better. thank you!!

So sorry to hear this.
Sounds like it is a more recent predicament, her just amassing and no longer selling.
That might make it easier to help her to change.

A very good book for you to read is "Digging Out".
Another very good book is "Buried In Treasures.
These books explain many of the "whys" they may be hoarding and give good information as to how to help them stop and clean up.
