LIVING WITH HOARDING

Living with hoarding

I have been living with my boyfriend for eight years and when I came into it I knew there was a problem, I thought that I could help him clean things up and everything would be okay. I was so wrong. I would clean up and declutter an area of the home and he would go out shopping and fill it up again as if any empty place must be filled. I have tried talking to him about it and he just gets mad and defensive as if my desire to have clean uncluttered home is offensive to him. I am at the end of my rope.

Hi Linda,
I think a lot of people in love have fallen into this situation. The bottom line is until the hoarder wants to change, they are not going to know matter how much pressure you put on them. You can beg and plead, kick and scream, threaten to leave and any number of responses, but the end result will always be the same...until they want to change. You may have to realize that he is unwilling and not ready yet. You need to live for yourself. Keep in mind that hoarders, even if they seek help will always have hoarding tendencies and will most often relapse during difficult times in their lives which is the last time you would want it since you are already under stress. Wish I had better advice, but I think you see how stressful life with a hoarder can be and you don't have to live this way.
