HOARDING IN MY LIFE

Hoarding in my life

Hello everybody.

For me, throwing things is a trouble. Since I remember was very attached to my belongings, but at home all was in control because my mom. She was very tidy and efficient doing housework (unfortunately, I'm not). Despite all, I kept many things, for example my school notebooks and books from previous years, and I refused flatly to get rid of them. Only after much insistence was able to donate some of them.

When a very much loved aunt died (more than 10 years ago), my mom was in charge, she decided what was donated, discarded, or kept. I suffered greatly, besides the loss, having to let go away the memories represented by my aunt's things. Even, I got up at night to check what could rescue... from trash... and hid it. When my mother realized it, ouch!

My mom died also some years later, and I fell apart. In the absence of someone who placed orderliness, our home became a disaster (my dad isn't very tidy and I have no siblings). I never learned to be ordered.

Now I live alone in another city and rent a small room in a student house, but regardless of its size this room is a mess too 🙁 I try to keep it ok, but is very little what I discard and only change of place most of the stuff.

What stuff? Many plastic bags, empty containers, boxes, lots of papers, mostly from school, "disposable" cups & cutlery, empty bottles, used foil, brochures and flyers, newspapers, and so on. Think I can need them later.

I have noticed that store not only material things, but computer files also! I need to do some homework, and download lots of interesting internet articles that can't organize and read all later. Help!

Thanks for reading.

(I've tried to post this message several times, but only appear I have to verify the image, which I did!)

Hi whew!

Sorry to see your post so late! And thank you for your nice words 🙂

-------

On recent days I've been wondering if I really am a hoarder or it's just that I have trouble with organisation. If it's just that I'm an irresponsible, lazy person or what.

But, reading what I wrote reminded the big disaster I have in my small student room (now I'm in my father's house, on vacation).

Whatever, I have a true problem with having too much stuff, throwing things and organising them, and with procrastination. :-/

Hi Mar,

I just checked and saw this is an older post. If you're still around, please know I sure understand that whole parenting thing. My mother could save stuff, but she was so very well organized so it never was in a mess. I, on the other hand, did not inherit that ability to keep things tidy. You can always tell which space is mine by the trail to the door and the piles on the desk.

Good luck on your venture to figure out what helps your life and what hurts it. It will be different from your parents, a way of life that you can call your own.

I'm sorry for the losses of your mother and your aunt. I have found writing in a journal about losses helps me actually let go of physical clutter.

(((HUGS)))
