HOARDER IN THE WORK PLACE

Hi,

I am trying to help an employee who is a hoarder. She is a wonderful person and well aware of her disorder but refuses to get help with it. She has had meds prescribed but never follows through with them to see any result. She did see a therapist for some time but that fizzled out as well.

In addition to trying to help her manage this it is becoming harder and harder to support her constant hoarder. She has filled every desk drawer to the top with everything imaginable (not work related items) has boxes all around her under her desk with her "things" in them. The top of her desk has about a 8x8 space for her to work in.

I'm at a loss, we have tried everything. If I approach her she gets extremely emotional and even angry. The owner has even offered to let her store some of her things in our warehouse but she still continues to pile up her things everywhere.

She is a great gal and I feel terrible having to push her on this but I'm getting a lot of pressure to get her to "clean up" her area. She is our receptionist and it's really unfair to the business owner and makes it extremely difficult to approach others to clean up their areas.

HELP!! Any idea's would be welcome, the last thing I want to do is make things harder on her but I'm really caught between a rock and a hard place.

Thanks for listening.

Hi Kaleen 🙂

A good book for you to read is "Digging Out".

Since this is a business and the clutter is in the reception area the company does have the right to set standards.
First impressions of the customers is very important in any business.

I would suggest you write up a list of what is and what is not acceptable that all employees must adhere to so no one person is singled out.

Good luck 🙂
