Hi! I'm desperately seeking help for my teenage daughter who is starting to exhibit hoarder tendencies. This is not typical teenage messy bedroom. This is cat feces not being cleaned, piles of garbage, moldy food everywhere, no way to walk though everything on the floor. Piles and piles of men's oversized sweatshirts and she won't stop buying them even though there is no need for a 27th sweatshirt. No where to store them. 11 backpacks, all full of papers, garbage, mold, house keys she keeps losing, homework she forgot to turn in. She never cleans out a backpack, just hides it and gets a new one.

The distress she exhibits when we try to clean, just a little, is enormous. I'm worried for her and it's been really difficult trying to find help for her issues. 🙁

Hello Shannon

Have you considered counseling?
Not hoarding related, just general counseling.

There may be and probably are other reasons for this neglect she is displaying.

Hoarding behavior so often comes from some kind of trauma experienced when people are younger.
Deal with the underlying issues and the clutter and neglect of cleaning can be overcome more easily.
Focusing on the just the mess is not how to help change the behavior.
The over buying of items is usually just a way to try to self soothe whatever turmoil is going on inside.

Good luck and best wishes to the both of you.
