Hi, my aunt has physical disabilities that have caused her home to become a hazard to her. It has become a case of extreme clutter and there is garbage and who knows what else about a foot deep in some areas. Her plumbing isn't working in some areas of the house. Recently she fell and severely broke her arm because of the clutter and she didn't want to call 911 because she did not want them to see her home. She waited hours before calling them while she lay helpless on the floor. She has been living in a skilled nursing facility for the past month while she recovers from surgery and needs to get her home in living condition before being able to move back in. We called a hoarding specialist to see about cleaning it up and they quoted $13,000. There is no way that she can afford that. Are there any agencies that can help with the cost?

Did you manage to get other quotes? I agree with Cory. You should try to find a few companies, but be sure to read the fine print about what is and is not included. Typically when the house is condemned, the building inspector is also going to require that the house has running water, heat, toileting, etc. prior to allowing her to come home. Does she have any property she may be able to sell to make some quick money? How about a home equity loan? There is also the possibility of financing with the cleaning company, depending on with whom you contract the work. Finally, they could place a lien on the home for the costs of their work.
Best of luck.
Nicole

Unfortunately, I do not know of any agencies offering financial help in these situations. I am not sure how bad her house is but it may be worth getting a couple estimates if there are more companies available. I can help you with that if needed. Join us on Sunday night for our support meeting here on this website and we can have more time to talk about what you are facing.
